Food Processing

Food processing has been identified as one of the 14 thrust sectors for the state in the industrial policy framework of 2014. Currently, Food processing industry in Telangana processes ~25% agri & allied output by value and adds 12.5% in value. Telangana is blessed with a rich agri food raw material base.

India’s food ecosystem offers huge opportunities for investments with stimulating growth in the food retail sector, favourable economic policies and attractive fiscal incentives. The Food & Grocery market in India is the sixth largest in the world.

Telangana has a long history of auto sector presence with the likes of Hyderabad Allwyn limited and HMT bearings. The current auto sector presence in the state is led by Mahindra group, Hyundai and MRF tyres.

India is expected to be the world&#39;s third-largest automotive market in terms of volume by 2026. The industry currently manufactures 25 mn vehicles, of which 3.5 mn are exported. India holds a strong position in the international heavy vehicles arena as it is the largest tractor manufacturer, second-largest bus manufacturer and third largest heavy trucks manufacturer in the world.

Textiles & Apparel

Telangana is well known for historical Textile sector operations with 50,000 power looms, 17,000 handlooms and skilled work force. It is the 3rd highest cotton producing state in India with annual production of about 5 million bales. Telangana is also one of the most suited location for textiles due to its geographic location and accessibility to the required resources.

India offers a unique opportunity for a global textiles player not only to leverage the ecosystem to set up a manufacturing base but also to meet the growing demand for value-added textiles. The presence of both backward linkages right up to the fiber and forward linkages right up to the retail, in physical as well as virtual platforms, supported by a large pool of manpower with skills, make it a ready to exploit the opportunity for the industry. India is the 2nd Largest Producer of Textile & Apparel Globally and the 6th Largest Exporter of Man-Made Fibre Textiles. Also, India is the largest producer of Cotton and 2nd largest producer of Polyester and Viscose globally.

Plastics & Polymers

Telangana is one of the the leading states for manufacturing of moulds and tooling for FMCG products.Telangana has a strong presence of plastics industry with about 6,000 units operating in the State, of which about 90 per cent are MSMEs.The organized plastics sector employs more than 1+ lakh people.

The Indian plastics industry made a promising beginning in 1957 with the production of polystyrene. Thereafter, significant progress has been made, and the industry has grown and diversified rapidly. The industry spans the country and hosts more than 2,000 exporters.

FMCG

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector is India’s fourth largest sector with household and personal care accounting for 50 per cent of FMCG sales in India. Growing awareness, easier access and changing lifestyles have been the key growth drivers for the sector.

The Government has allowed 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in food processing and single-brand retail and 51 per cent in multi-brand retail. This would bolster employment, supply chain and high visibility for FMCG brands across organised retail markets thereby bolstering consumer spending and encouraging more product launches. The sector witnessed healthy FDI inflow of US$ 16.28 billion during April 2000-March 2020.

MSME

It is estimated that Telangana is home to about 2.6 million MSMEs, out of which 56% are in rural areas and 44% in urban areas. As many as 63.388 Million registered MSME units have commenced their operations since the formation of the state, with an investment of about Rs.11,487crore. Since January 2015, MSMEs have provided additional employment opportunities to approximately 1109.89 lakh persons.

The estimated number of MSMEs in India is a staggering 63.388 million (according to MSME Ministry annual report of 2020-21). One of the major driving factors of India’s GDP growth is the MSME industry, which employs 40% of India’s Workforce(110.98 M), contributing 45% of the output and 40% of the exports.

Gems and Jewelry

Gems and Jewellery is one of the 14 thrust sectors under the Telangana government’s industrial policy. Hyderabad is a world-renowned centre for precious and semi-precious studded jewellery. Hyderabadi pearls and lacquer bangles made by local artisans are known all over the world.

The Gems and Jewellery sector plays a significant role in the Indian economy, contributing around 7 per cent of the country’s GDP and 15 per cent to India’s total merchandise exports. It also employs over 4.64 million workers and is expected to employ 8.23 million by 2022. One of the fastest growing sectors, it is extremely export oriented and labour intensive.

Telangana has a vast solar potential estimated at 20.41 GW and a wind energy potential of 4.2 GW. Telangana has a total installed capacity of 4,036 MW renewable energy power, including solar energy at 3,583 MW and wind energy of 128 MW besides contribution from other renewable energy sources.

The country is expected to grow its renewable energy capacity to 192.1 GW by 2023. Western European countries are the leading source of imports of environmental technologies into India. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in environment equipment and services is allowed under the automatic route with up to 100 per cent foreign equity holding.

Renewable Energy

Telangana has a vast solar potential estimated at 20.41 GW and a wind energy potential of 4.2 GW. Telangana has a total installed capacity of 4+GW renewable energy power, including solar energy at 3,621 MW and wind energy of 128 MW besides contribution from other renewable energy sources.

In 2019, India was ranked as the fourth most attractive renewable energy market in the world. The country has set an ambitious target of 450 GW of renewable power by 2030. This one of the world’s largest expansion plans in renewable energy sector.

Minerals & Wood Based

Telangana is home to one of the largest coal deposits among the southern states of India.  Telangana is the leading producer of barytes, dolomite, feldspar, laterite, limestone, Quartz and Sand (others). It accounts for 47% kyanite, 29% corundum, 10% fuller’s earth and 9% limestone resources of the country. Telangana is endowed with the internationally known black, pink, blue and multicoloured varieties of granites.

India is home to 1,531 operating mines and produces 95 minerals – 4 fuel-related minerals, 10 metallic minerals, 23 non-metallic minerals, 3 atomic minerals and 55 minor minerals. India is the 2nd largest producer of coal. Coal production grew at CAGR 4.6% over FY14-FY19 (to 730.35 MT) and is expected to grow 6-7% Y-o-Y over FY20 as miners focus on the surface mining of coal.

Logistics

Logistics is one of the 14 thrust sectors under the Telangana government’s industrial policy. Hyderabad has emerged as a major investment destination connecting several industrial corridors in the country and is growing at a rate of 12 per cent in the logistics space. The award-winning Hyderabad Airport offers a gateway to several international destinations.

A robust logistics sector can go a long way in boosting India’s quest for being a manufacturing giant given that several initiatives like ‘Make in India’ have been launched by the government. The industry has seen rapid growth in the last few years due to increased planned outlay of the government, improved infrastructure facilities and greater access to global markets.

Single Window of Clearance

Telangana is the only state today which allows for a self certification-based system for approvals and clearances. This implies that businesses do not need to wait for the last piece of paper before they commence their activities. They are permitted to hit the ground running right from day one by giving a self-certificate that they will comply with the laws of the land. Permissions are required only before going into the stage of commercial production, for which the government has legislated the mostly first and critically acclaimed (EoDB-World Bank) single window of clearance called TS-iPass.

Approval

The Telangana Government has enacted the “Telangana State Industrial Project Approval and Self-Certification System (TS-iPASS) for speedy processing of applications. TS-iPASS is a single window for various clearances required for setting up industries. This legislation GUARANTEES ALL approvals within a maximum of 15 days and is enforced by a CMO led chasing cell. Post the mandated days, the approvals are deemed as given if no response is shared by the Government. In addition to this, a penalty of INR 1000 per day is levied on the officer(s) who is accountable for this delay.
